I ask
written 2020, last edit 2022
“Who are you?” I ask
Begging for it to be answered,
But by whom I have not yet met
By whom my soul longs for,
My heart stretching so thin, so far
To reach you
To touch you
“Where are you?” I ask
Hoping for it to be answered
By whom I am searching for,
By whom I belong with
My mind running free
to imagine where you might be
“What are you like?” I ask
Wishing I knew
Wishing I could name your birthday and favorites
Wishing that perhaps you knew mine too
That I love flowers and books
But most of all you
“When will we meet?” I ask
Praying, to no god,
That it will be soon enough,
Enough so that we may save each other
Enough that we may live a full life with one another
“Why must it be like this?” I ask
Aching for a response
Aching for someone I haven’t yet met
Someone that perhaps I never will
So I ask again, perhaps to no one
But maybe, just maybe, that no one is listening
Begging for it to be answered,
But by whom I have not yet met
By whom my soul longs for,
My heart stretching so thin, so far
To reach you
To touch you
“Where are you?” I ask
Hoping for it to be answered
By whom I am searching for,
By whom I belong with
